Across the Land

I suppose I gush about Portland enough, but there’s something about that bike-heavy city that’s to be envied.

I spent the morning going through Teams of Portland and I loved the little look into the life of riders out there. I’m sad to yet again, not be able to go to NAHBS but there’s traveling to be done soon (more on that in a bit).

We’ve got a pretty interesting mix of things going on in Chicago. But perhaps because we’re next to Wisconsin, or that there’s a lot of history of cycling in the area that there’s almost too much going on. But thats probably a good thing. Riders all over, catering to different needs and styles and rides. Geographically, we’re vast. Little pockets of scenes everywhere.

As I write this, I’m smiling because I see a fella cruising along the sidewalk on a thick tired cruiser making his way in the snow and off Ashland, which to me, is one of the worst streets to ride on in the city.

The travel bit: off to San Francisco from February 14th thru the 18th with a possible side trip to Santa Cruz. The SF crew is always a pleasure to see again. And, Austin bound again in March for SXSW, where I’ll be speaking for the Interactive portion of the festival — a workshop called “Design is in the Details.” I’m looking forward to riding and reconnecting with the Austin crew.

  1. Full circle – trying to solve a CSS layout bug at work led me to subtraction, which led me here. bikes, photos, code – small world. Where are you going to be in SF? I’d love to say hi.

  2. I really need to make it to SXSW next year. Do you stick around for the music portion at all?

I’m hitting SF this year too, for the first time. Going to the SSWCs in Napa at the end of August. woot.

  3. Adam – dropped you an email, hope you got it.

Wes – not really. It starts up the day I’m leaving (and the same last year as well). However, bands are playing around the dates even if they’re not officially part of the festival just to get in on the action. There’s so much going on. It’s a damn fine time.

    SSWC’s in Napa? Excellent.

  4. I hope SF is good to you. Maybe we’ll run into each other! Gonna do any riding out there?

  5. Huh. In SF. Still out here? Naz, shot you an email the other day with some contact info of a friend in need.

If you’re still in SF and care for a pint, drop me a line.

Your west coast trip sounds awesome. Shame the weather is a bit damp right now.

  6. Hey Charles – nope, as noted above, I’ll be out there 02/14 – 02/18.

Hey Erik – maybe! I’ll likely be riding around.

Kinda tough on these short trips since there’s so many people to see and visit with on both the professional work end and also the bike related end. I feel like I need two weeks to properly visit with friends!

But hey, SF is small right?

  7. SF is darn small alright! Don’t forget Tour of California… kicks off on Sunday in Palo Alto. Might be a stretch to get down there but it’d be worth it.
